BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli police on Wednesday arrested an Israeli man in connection with swastikas that were found spray painted on the walls of a synagogue and other buildings in a Jewish area of Jerusalem city, according to a statement from Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri.
According to al-Samri, swastikas were found spray painted on the walls of a synagogue in Jerusalem’s city center on Wednesday.
“A worshiper who arrived at the synagogue to pray noticed that four swastikas were sprayed on the walls and he immediately alerted the police,” the statement said.
Police also noticed that someone had attempted to set fire to the place, and that four books were burned.
Shortly after, police officers found similar swastikas spray painted on the walls at the entrances to two buildings in the same neighborhood.
In a third statement released hours later, al-Samri said Israeli police had arrested a 38-year-old Israeli suspect who told interrogators he had spray painted similar swastikas in a neighborhood in northern Jerusalem.
The Israeli suspect’s motives remained unclear.
