GAZA (Ma’an) -- A military court in the besieged Gaza Strip sentenced two Palestinian men to execution by firing squad for drug dealing on Thursday.
The court said in statement that it sentenced the men -- whom it identified as “R.M.” and “M.H.” -- to execution by firing squad, adding that the court also sentenced nine others to five to 20 years in prison for being involved in drug dealing.
Hamas, the de facto ruling party in Gaza, has come under repeated criticism from international human rights organizations and foreign governments for its use of the death penalty.
Under Palestinian law, all death sentences must be ratified by the Palestinian president before they can be carried out.
Despite this, the Hamas administration in Gaza has carried out executions periodically without receiving approval from PA President Mahmoud Abbas since 2010.
According to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, at least 22 death sentences have been carried out in the besieged Gaza Strip since the Hamas movement rose to power there in 2007.
