Al-Qassam Brigades: Israel has 24 hours to respond to demands of hunger strikers

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas movement, announced on Tuesday that Israeli authorities had 24 hours to respond to the demands of the some 1,600 Palestinian prisoners currently on hunger strike in Israeli custody, or else Israel would “pay for each day they ignore the prisoners’ demands.”
Spokesperson for the brigades, Abu Obeida, said in a video-recorded speech that the group “gives the leadership of the enemy 24 hours to respond to the demands of the prisoners, or else the Brigades have decided to make the enemy pay for each day they ignore the prisoners’ demands.”
Abu Obeida added that the movement would add 30 names of Palestinian prisoners that they would demand to be released in a prisoner exchange deal for each day that Israel refuses the demands of the hunger strikers.
He went on to warn Israel of ignoring the “just, legal demands of the prisoners.” Abu Obeida also called upon Palestinians in the occupied West Bank to march in the streets in a “Day of Anger” in solidarity with hunger-striking prisoners.
Some 1,500 political prisoners launched the open-ended hunger strike on Palestinian Prisoners’ Day, April 17, under the aegis of imprisoned Fatah leader Marwan Barghouthi, demanding of basic rights, such as an end to the policies of administrative detention, solitary confinement, and deliberate medical negligence.
