MEL GIBSON’S Hacksaw Ridge, starring Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington and Vince Vaughn, received a 10 minute standing ovation at its world premiere.
After six minutes of clapping, the director and his cast finally went down into the audience to greet those attending in Venice.
The applause continued another four minutes for the story of the real-life conscientious objector.
Garfield stars as Desmond T Doss, a solider and Seventh Day Adventist, who saved 75 men at Okinawa without taking a gun into battle.
“A lot of attention needs to be paid to our warriors; they need some love and understanding.
“I hope this film imparts that message. If it does nothing but that, that’s great.”
The movie is expected to be a big contender in the upcoming awards season.
It will be released in the US on November 4, while international dates are yet to be confirmed.
