israeli authorities have trained Jewish settlers to use arms in order to prevent Palestinians from working on their farms or building new houses near illegal West Bank settlements, Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed yesterday. According to the paper, Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank have formed a volunteer policing unit to combat what they call the “Palestinian takeover of Gush land.”
Haaretz said that members of the unit recently underwent police training. It pointed out that the group is to prevent Palestinians from working on their farms or building on their lands near the Jewish settlements of Kfar Adumim, Nofei Prat, Alon and Mitzpe Yericho.
The group of settlers also coordinate with the Jerusalem Periphery Forum, the objective of which is to prevent Palestinian construction on both sides of Highway 1 – between Ma’aleh Adumim and Jericho.
The group’s Facebook page said that work on the joint project with the police has been in place for a long time and now “conditions have ripened for setting it in motion.”
“We will operate the unit to maintain security and guard the land of the Gush in full coordination with the Ma’aleh Adumim police and under their auspices,” the post said, stressing that it aims to “prevent Palestinian takeover of Gush land.”
