DJ Andy Peebles, one of the last people to see John Lennon alive:
Given that the Lennons never went anywhere without their bodyguards – despite John’s insistence that he loved living in New York because he could move around freely, visiting cinemas, restaurants and galleries without being bothered by fans – Andy remains incredulous that the minders were missing on the night John died.
He says: ‘They had their own two uniformed security guards, who accompanied them at all times. Blue blazers, slacks, built like brick outhouses. I didn’t get to learn their names. They were definitely armed: I could see their gun holsters under their unbuttoned jackets.
‘On the night that John was murdered, it turned out, they were nowhere to be seen. I have so often wondered: where were they?
‘Those guys were with John and Yoko all the time – apart from the night that John was killed. Why not that night?
‘For 35 years, there have been more questions than answers.’
