Several European states have decided to boycott an international Israeli security exhibition that opened on Tuesday 2 June in Tel Aviv, Israeli newspaper Maariv has revealed.
The newspaper reported on Tuesday that a number of European countries, most notably France and the United Kingdom, decided not to participate in the 7th Israel Defence Expo.
The newspaper noted that the event includes a display of Israeli and international security, military and technological equipment, and would provide an opportunity for senior-level security meetings between interested parties from all over the world. This exhibition is also "an opportunity for marketing the Israeli security industries," according to the paper.
The exhibition's subscription procedures stipulate that interested companies should obtain advance approval from their respective states to participate in the exhibition. But this year, many companies could not get such approval from their countries, including from France and Britain, as well as a number of Western European and Scandinavian countries. One Spanish company has displayed its products in the Israeli exhibition under another company's name out of fear of losing its business relations with those states that are boycotting the exhibition.
The newspaper noted that the decision of these countries to boycott the Israel Defence Expo makes good on prior warnings made to the Israeli foreign ministry regarding a "tsunami of boycotts" against Israel that began with the call for the suspension of Israel's membership in the World Federation of Football (FIFA).
