Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Russia demands that the arms embargo against Iran be lifted.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia demands that the arms embargo against Iran be lifted, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Monday.
“A range of unregulated issues remains…The main one is the
unregulated issues of the likelihood and conditions of lifting the
current arms embargo against Iran. The Russian Federation demands
lifting [the arms embargo] first and foremost as a first step
after concluding all the other arrangements,” Ryabkov said during an
international committee hearing in the country’s upper house
of parliament.
The official pointed out the UN Security Council's exclusive role in reinstating sanctions against Tehran.
Ryabkov added that the six world powers responsible for reaching the milestone framework deal with Iran two weeks ago are expected to meet again later in April.
The sides struck a preliminary deal on April 2 to reduce Iran's uranium enrichment capabilities by two-thirds over the next decade. The country is also required to allow strict outside monitoring until 2030.
A final deal ensuring Iran's inability to develop nuclear weapons within the framework of its civilian program is expected to be hammered out by June 30.
