Home Ministry's national disaster management division chief Rameshwor
Dangal reported Monday that the official death toll from a major
earthquake in Nepal which had stricken the country on Saturday, surged
to 3,218.
"The death toll has reached 3,218 and over 6,500 are injured," Dangal was quoted as saying by AFP.
The
7.8 magnitude quake occurred Saturday morning around 51 miles northwest
of Kathmandu, causing extreme massive damage in the region. The
disaster triggered avalanches on Mount Everest, as well as tremors
in neighbouring areas of India, Bangladesh and Tibet.More than 6.6 million people reside in areas affected by the earthquake, according to the United Nations.
Several countries have offered assistance to Nepal following the natural disaster. The Russian emergencies ministry stated earlier Sunday that it would send teams of rescuers, doctors and psychologists to the earthquake-stricken country.
