Every one is aware that there are contradictions in the Bible, except for the fundamentalist
idiots. “They hold that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, and literally
true word of God” (Hoffmann, in Burr, p. 7). But for centuries, writers have dared, often at great personal costs, to show that it
isn’t. Beliefs are held, though contradicted by the evidence. William Henry Burr published anonymously in 1859 his collection of the Self-Contradictions of the Bible. One review said of this work, a vilely composed and wretchedly printed attempt to
destroy the faith of the civilized world in the Christian Religion (p. 9). Fortunately
it did not go rapidly away, but remained in print
until 1890, and then was brought out again by Prometheus Press in 1987,
Self-Contradictions of the Bible, William Henry Burr,
Introduction by R. Joseph Hoffmann.
There is a old tradition
of pointing out the contradictions (and other absurdities) in the Bible. The
philosopher Porphyry of Tyre (232-305 CE) gave us the
earliest surviving (in critical summation by Catholic cleric and critic
Macarius Magnes) example. It too is available through Prometheus Books in a translation
by Hoffmann. In that tradition is another listing plus also Bible atrocities.
