The heated exchange at a security conference in Munich pointed to the fragility of the transatlantic consensus on how to confront Russian President Vladimir Putin over a deepening conflict in eastern Ukraine that has killed more than 5,000.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, also in Munich, said there were "good grounds for optimism" that the talks between Merkel, Putin and Hollande could yield a deal.
But Lavrov also delivered a diatribe against the West. He accused Europe and the United States of supporting a "coup d'etat" against deposed Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovich, a Moscow ally, a year ago and turning a blind eye to nationalists he said were intent on ethnic cleansing in eastern Ukraine.

Lavrov is completely right in his assessment of the US's complicity in the coup d'etat which brought down the duly elected (albeit crooked as a dog's hind leg) leader Viktor Yanukovich. Obama and Victoria Nuland have publicly admitted so.

However, since the advent of NGO and foundation spawned “color revolutions” attributed to the people of target countries, while in actuality orchestrated by USAID and the National Endowment for Democracy, the U.S. government has admitted its role in overturning governments.

US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe, Nuland said: “Since the declaration of Ukrainian independence in 1991, the United States supported the Ukrainians in the development of democratic institutions and skills in promoting civil society and a good form of government - all that is necessary to achieve the objectives of Ukraine’s European. We have invested more than 5 billion dollars to help Ukraine to achieve these and other goals. ” Nuland said the United States will continue to “promote Ukraine to the future it deserves.”
Since when, ladies and gentlemen of Reuters, do you characterize telling the hard truth, which Lavrov did, as having "delivered a diatribe against the West"?!?
The facts on the ground, in the face of these two interviews, are incontrovertible.
OF course, NO ONE, apparently, at Reuters was actally going to do the real fact checking legitimate journalism deserves; it was simply too time consuming, too...professional to get one's hands dirty doing.
And that comment about Russia having "annexed" Crimea?!?!?
This is a bald-faced lie, and you know it. And it is apparent that whoever threw this verbal vomit together has absolutely no understanding of history.
When the legitimate Ukrainian leadership of Yanukovic was cut short, Crimea requested to become part of the Russian Federation. Crimea had been historically Russian, until it was, itself, annexed by Kruschev, himself a native Ukrainian, in the mid-50s.
This Crimean referendum was characterized by international observers as free and fair; one can hardly say that about the election of Poroshenko in the Ukraine.
And if I know this, as just an average American, then milllions more of us Americans understand this as well.
