Abbas Decides Against Palestine Joining the International Criminal Court (ICC)
by Johnny Punish
President of the National Palestinian Unity Government Mahmoud Abbas has halted government attempts to try Israel at the International Criminal Court for war crimes particularly those committed in Gaza. Abbas says the move is necessary to relaunch negotiations with Israel.
The latest Israeli offensive on Gaza killed more than 2,100 people and destroyed over 10,000 buildings and homes. However Abbas snubbing the decision has angered Hamas that argues the process to take Israel to the ICC should have taken place well before the recent onslaught started. Hamas says signing the Roman Statute is the right of every Palestinian victim not osnly from the war on Gaza but further from the West Bank, where the population is facing violations from the Israeli forces on a daily basis.
Abbas is under fire for his decision to block all attempts for the Palestinian Authority to take Israel to the ICC. Critics say this move deprives Palestinians’ basic right to try Israel for war crimes in Gaza.
To this writer, I say what resumption of negotiations? You mean the one where they take more land daily while they keep whispering sweet nothings in our collective ear? Or the one where they “mow the lawn” in Gaza every few years?
Let’s be clear! Abbas had his chance. He has blown it again. It is now time for ABBAS to resign and be replaced with a highly educated suit wearing charismatic player who can regain leverage and force Israel to comply with international law.
I mean the only element of deal Israel will ever understand is LEVERAGE!
In lieu. for the benefit of all Israelis, Palestinians and we in the global community, Israeli leaders must be taken to court, tried and convicted. Then once convicted, we the people can negotiate with Israel from a position of strength so that human rights can be enforced on the extremists within Israel that want indefinite occupation, oppression, and murder.
