بقاء إسرائيل خارج إطار معاهدة عدم الانتشار يشكل في حد ذاته تهديداً للأمن والسلم الإقليمي والدولي
Ambassador Salah Abed el-Shafi, Permanent Observer of Palestine to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has sharply criticized the Israeli atomic weapons, which directly threaten the safety and security of the Palestinian, the Middle East nations and the people everywhere.
Ambassador Abed el-Shafi urged the International community to give answers over their silence about the Israel nuclear arms. Speaking at Tuesday night on the occasion of the 58th Session of the General Conference of the (IAEA) being held this week in Vienna.
He criticized the nuclear countries cover on the Israel’s nuclear capabilities by claiming that Israel is a “responsible” country and do not constitute a threat for others. He said: “this claim is unacceptable and incompatible with the reality of the situation in our region.”
Abed el-Shafi gave an example about the irresponsibility of israel, he said: “The world and the international organizations specialized in war crimes, saw and monitored the war crimes committed by Israel against the occupied Palestinian civilians in Gaza strip during what so-called “Operation Protective Edge”.
He said: “During the Israeli aggression against our besieged people in Gaza, israel used the most sophisticated and deadly weapons, the weapons which internationally prohibited”. He added: “israel dropped during the 20 days of war against civilians in Gaza Strip more than 51 thousand tons of explosives.”
The statement of Palestine at the IAEA highlighted important points about the dangers of the israeli nuclear weapons in Palestine and its negative impact on the nature, the health of the Palestinians, peace and security of the peoples.
Abed el-Shafi said: “While the member states at the International Atomic Energy Agency moving towards strengthening the system of nuclear safety, they allows Israel keep the Palestinian people under the threat of the disastrous situation of its nuclear weapon and facilities. He pointed out to the numerous reports which confirm the deteriorated situation of the infrastructure of a number of israeli nuclear facilities at a time while the Palestinians do not have a protection system which is able to help them to face any nuclear disaster which may erupt in the region.
In Nov. 2012, Israel with coordination with USA and Finland government obstructed the plan for a meeting to lay the groundwork for the possible creation of a WMD-free Middle East was agreed to at a May 2010 conference of 189 parties to the 1970 nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, or NPT. The meeting was scheduled to be held in Helsinki in December 2012, but was canceled.
During the past years, the IAEA member states voted against draft resolutions submitted by the Arab States regarding israeli “Nuclear Capabilities”, which called on Israel to join the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Arab states submitted a non-binding resolution on israel nuclear weapons for the first time during the IAEA 54th General Conference in 2010. The courageous step, which was impeded because of the cowed silence of the international community and the IAEA member states regarding the lack of movement in efforts to create a Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction, was strongly opposed by israel, USA, Canada, Britain, New Zealand, Australia and the EU, who all colluded to thwart consecutive draft resolutions in this regards introduced by Arab states.
The thwarting of the draft resolution on israeli Nuclear Weapons clearly shows the double standards of the state members of the IAEA towards the major issue of the Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction, which threaten the security of the whole region.
