Bahrain, corrupt regime with no legitimacy: Analyst

Tue Sep 30, 2014

Press TV has conducted an interview with Colin Cavell, an author and lecturer from West Virginia, about life imprisonment sentences given to nine anti-regime protesters.
The following are highlights of that interview.

Press TV: What reason does the regime have to impose such a sentence and taking away citizenship of the protesters?
Cavell: The regime’s existence is threatened and so it takes citizenship away from anyone that opposes it and in that way they can tell the international community these people are illegally in Bahrain.
They are only fooling themselves because the international community knows this is an illegal corrupt regime. It is a corrupt regime without legitimacy. The people want democracy. The people want power to rise up from the people.
The regime makes up charges to arrest those who oppose the monarchical dictatorship; and with the oppressive life sentences. This is ridiculous.
The regime indicates its instability. It indicates that it is on its last days.
Press TV: We have had news of Nabeel Rajab, a famous rights activist, released from Bahrain prison recently. He said since these protests have broken out arms sales in the UK have tripled.
Does that not give the notion for the regime that it is OK to continue the oppression when they are buying arms from countries like the UK?
Cavell: They buy arms from the UK and US. Both of these countries allow the Al Khalifa dictatorship to get away with impunity.
They are torturing people. They are jailing people. They are murdering people.
For these countries to allow arms sales to continue to this Bahrain dictatorship shows they are hypocritical in their claim to be supporting democracy.
They are not supporting democracy. They are supporting monarchy – unelected leaders that have no legitimacy amongst the population.
