Why Israel's blockade of Gaza was a mistake

Why Israel's blockade of Gaza was a mistake

Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas' military wing who has been on Israel’s “Most Wanted” list since the mid-1990s, disseminated a recording this week (July 27) in which he stipulated the removal of the closure on the Gaza Strip as a pre-condition for a cease-fire. All of the military conflicts between Israel and Hamas revolved around this issue. Hamas wants, more than anything else, to end the blockade because this state of affairs makes it difficult to rule the Strip and provide for the needs of the population. Israel, on the other hand, obstinately refuses to revoke the decision taken by former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on June 15, 2007.

The starvation blockade of Gaza was Israel's punishment for the Gazans voting for HAMAS in the 2006 elections. Israel hoped that by starving the people of Gaza they would abandon their elected government and accept proxy Israeli rule through Abbas' PA. This is a repeat of 1948, when the Soviet Union blockaded the highway leading from West Berlin to West Germany, to try to starve the West Berliners into accepting East German rule. The world responded to this obvious atrocity by mounting the Berlin airlift, flying food, water, medicine and other supplies into West Berlin for almost a year, until the Soviets abandoned their plan and re-opened the highway. It is a telling reminder of just how much Israel has subverted the governments of the world that the same nations that united to save West Berlin do not lift a finger to save Gaza.
