Moroccan Jews call on King to block attempts to withdraw citizenship

In the wake of international objections to Donald Trump’s decision to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem, Morocco’s Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) has announced its intention to submit a bill stipulating the withdrawal of citizenship from Moroccan Jews living in the occupied Palestinian territories. The move is apparently supported by those opposed to normalisation with Israel and calling for the Kingdom to sever ties with the Israeli occupation authorities.

Moroccan Jews have described the PAM bill as “reckless” and called on King Mohammed VI to interfere and put an end to this proposal. The draft bill has not yet been submitted, but Morocco’s Hespress news site quoted PAM’s Aziza Chagaf MP, who confirmed that it was discussed at a recent meeting with the former head of the Hamas political bureau, Khaled Meshaal, in Rabat on Tuesday.

Chagaf said that her party would submit a proposal to parliament stipulating that those Moroccan Jews who live in illegal Israeli settlements and occupied Jerusalem should have their Moroccan citizenship revoked. She added that before proposing the bill, the party will discuss and study the idea further and then put it up for a vote. PAM will also study its feasibility, as it is a measure that concerns citizens outside the country.
