Jewish Student Charged With Hate Crime For Vandalising Church With Swastika And Word “Trump”

Two one-time Northwestern University students arrested for spraypainting racist and homophobic messages, along with phallic drawings and the word “Trump” inside a campus chapel earlier this year now face two-dozen criminal charges related to the March 11 incident, including a dozen hate crime charges, according to prosecutors.

Anthony Morales, 19, and Matthew Kafker, 18, were charged in connection with the vandalism immediately after it was discovered. But a grand jury was subsequently convened, and handed up an indictment against the men, including 12 counts each of hate crime at a church/synagogue/place of worship, along with four counts of institutional vandalism and burglary, three counts of criminal damage and one count of criminal defacement, all felonies, Cook County prosecutors said this week.

Under Illinois law, the hate crime charge is a Class 3 felony that carries a sentence of between two to five years, though the judge may also sentence them to probation and order them to pay fines and restitution.

The most serious charges appear to be the burglary and institutional vandalism charges, both Class 2 felonies, which are punishable from three to seven years for each charge.

After being identified on the video and arrested, authorities said both men gave handwritten and videotaped confessions. The men, freshmen at the time of the incident, are no longer enrolled at the university, Northwestern spokesman Bob Rowley said.
