‘It was a subtle and quick moment in the film, but one worthy of pointing out.
Terry Gilliam’s latest The Zero Theorem portrays a near-future society run by scientific materialism, a place where hyper-stimulation through the ever-present telescreens, billboards, targeted advertisements that literally follow you down the street, pop music, signs and other continuous stimuli have created a dumbed-down, consumerist society with little meaning.
Only slightly ahead of where Western culture has already brought us, the film portrays a shallow and narcissistic culture obsessed with smart phones, tablet devices and even new religions based upon pop figures and superheroes (hinted at in references to the Church of Batman the Redeemer, for example).’
